F. Raymond Phillips — My Time on the Franklin & Megantic

F. Raymond “Ray” Phillips left behind a remarkable firsthand record of life and work on Maine's two-foot gauge railroads. His handwritten timebook and diary provides a day-by-day glimpse into the operation of the Franklin & Megantic and Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad during the early twentieth century.

Phillips recorded the everyday work of the railroad—locomotive assignments, train movements, track and section work, wrecks, snowstorms, bitter winter weather, repairs, and the people with whom he worked. His entries also capture life away from the railroad, including fishing trips, local events, family activities, and other details that bring his world to life.

This volume presents Phillips' original record together with extensive annotation and historical research, placing his brief diary entries into their larger railroad and local-history context. The book is profusely illustrated with historic photographs, maps, railroad documents, equipment information, and previously unpublished material.
